Milano Post-Expo
The sustainable residential neighbourhood
Architectural Design Workshop 2011 - Prof. Remo Dorigati

The "Ballatoio" House

The "Patio" House

Milano Post-Expo
in collaboration with Martina Mazza, Aurélie Sabatier
The project aims to design a new urban quarter on the site of the Expo 2015 in Milan.
The place is a big green area sprinkled with some exhibition pavillions, witnesses of the great event. The project tries to maintain the inherited regular layout, which is followed by the buildings, and at the same time to introduce a new element of “disturbance” which breaks the rigid geometry of the site: a Green Line that collects a program of activities linked to the green, to the sustainability, to the wellness.
The old urban axle, the decumano left by the expo, becomes the line of the fast circulation, while a more fluid and dinamic line represented by the Green Line becomes the symbol of the slow rithms.
The residencial buildings, which are tall and regular, maintain the rigid structure inherited by the expo, while the buildings which host public functions are lower and characterized by free shapes. The residences face the study of two different typologies: the “ballatoio” house, a typical historic type in Milan, and a “hybrid” building, a combination of the longitudinal house and the tower.
